Can I have an MRI if I have braces on my teeth?
It is safe to get an MRI with braces. The small amount of metal in your mouth from the brackets and wire will not have any negative effect on your health. The only potential issue with braces interfering with the MRI has to do with the distortion of the image.
Do MRI scans cause any harm?
Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, is considered one of the safest technologies for looking deep inside the body, because it does not carry the radiation risk of X-rays or PET scans. Magnetic field strength do not exceed the limits set by the Foreign Food and Drug Administration (FDA). MRI in the first trimester should only be performed after consultation with radiology.
Precautions to take before undergoing an MRI scan
- It should be avoided by those who are claustrophobic and unable to lie down inside the examination tunnel
- It should be avoided in individuals with metal implants in their bodies, such as:
- Patients with pacemakers
- Patients who have previously undergone surgery with clips or metal objects
- Patients with foreign objects or metal objects in their bodies, such as those who have been shot and have bullets lodged in their bodies
- Patients with coronary artery stents should ask the doctor who inserted the stent what type it is, whether an MRI is possible, or how many weeks they need to wait before having one. Currently, if the coronary artery stent is an MRI-compatible model, an MRI can be performed immediately without any adverse effects
